It somehow how figures that right after I saw [livejournal.com profile] lawless523 talking about the video of "Gangnam Style," an old friend would link to this NASA parody.

*sigh*   I wanna work at NASA!

"The FBI has uncovered a network of rogue DNS servers and has taken steps to disable it. The FBI is also undertaking an effort to identify and notify victims who have been impacted by the DNSChanger malware. One consequence of disabling the rogue DNS network is that victims who rely on the rogue DNS network for DNS service could lose access to DNS services ... ."

Basically, this malware gets into your system's DNS (domain name server) lookup tables and routes all your network access through their server. The idea was (I believe) that they could create a botnet this way. The FBI nabbed them and has kept the server up for a while, but they are taking it down Monday. So if you were hit with this malware, you won't be able to get online after that.

Check out this page on the FBI site for more, including links to pages that will check your system for you and how to check your system yourself, manually. (I did both for the netbook - I still need to do it on this box.)

https://forms.fbi.gov/check-to-see-if-your-computer-is-using-rogue-DNS

And if you are really paranoid - not a bad thing in this case - don't use that link but just go to the FBI site directly by entering the URL (which is exactly what you think it is - remember, .gov) and use the news link on the front about this.

To quote Wikipedia (simply because it's convenient and seems to have the facts in order): "On May 17, 2012, [Anita] Sarkeesian began a Kickstarter campaign to fund a new series of short videos that would examine gender tropes in video games. The Kickstarter campaign was featured as a campaign of note on the official Kickstarter blog, and reached its funding goal of $6,000 within 24 hours, eventually raising $158,917 over the course of a month. It also received a large number of negative comments, including threats of death and rape, racial abuse, and an extended attempt to have the campaign suspended ... "

So I'm guessing that most if not all of you know about Danish cartoonist/artist Humon's webcomic Scandanavia and the World (a/k/a SATW), which seems to be her answer to Hetalia. I was poking around her DeviantArt site the other day and found that she has another webcomic that more or less fulfills my ideal combination of cuteness plus sexy stuff: Manala Next Door (also known among fans as "Jacob and Nini") [WARNING - mostly very NSFW!)

Manala Next Door is a comic about mythology and cultural assumptions. Jacob is a yaksha (nature spirit from Hindu mythology) who was raised by demons (yes, Humon knows that "Jacob" is not a Hindu name). He's still basically on the side of good, but he's pretty earthy (to say the least). Nini is a sweet adorable little female kappa ... complete with just about all the real habits and behaviors of the kappa from classical Japanese mythology. They are in love. And ... smutty hilarity ensues.

Some links:

  • Modest Demons (this one is actually worksafe): Jacob and Nini looking very cute in traditional clothing from their respective cultures
  • Nini the Cute Kappa (NSFW): how they met
  • The Yokai Bar (NSFW): Jacob takes his new sweetie to meet his buddies at the bar, including Ruth (!), the big blue oni.
  • Sweet Nothings (NSFW): The things Jacob does for love. This is probably my favorite comic of the set.
  • Foundling (just a little semi-nudity and brain-breaking-ness): Yes, Nini is a demon.
  • Girls' Night (NSFW): Nini invites five of her best friends over to get to know Jacob.
  • Surprise Fail (NSFW): Jacob's the one who has an unpleasant surprise.

Enjoy!

This is about the issue that was freaking me out last night, after I upgraded my browser. The http:// protocol prefix wasn't showing in URLs (it did show https:// though) in the location/address field.

So I found this last night just before I logged off, but I was feeling hyper and cruddy and didn't trust myself to deal with it. (Today I'm sick - just some cruddy little bug, I think, exacerbated by stress.)

The solution is from Nicole Cozma at CNET, here. I'm going to put a summary in this post, just in case they rearrange their site so I can't find it again when I need it. (These things happen.)

Cut for a summary of the CNET instructions )

I just upgraded to Firefox 10, and it seems to be allergic to URLs and stuff!

The location bar doesn't have the http:// prefix, so if I copy that to make links, they're borked. Plus, when I hover over a link on a page, I can't see the URL anywhere! (I'm used to having it show up at the bottom of the page.)

I'm looking for fixes, but I'm not finding them!

HELP! I want to know where links are before I go to them! I want to be able to copy and paste URLs without having to type in the protocol prefix manually!

ETA: OK, I found the URL hover ... it's floating off at right bottom. Still can't find the solution to the http:// in the location field.

SOPA, PIPA lose support from lawmakers on Capitol Hill amid blackout

Co-sponsors who say they can no longer support their own legislation include Senators Marco Rubio, a Florida Republican, Roy Blunt, a Missouri Republican, and Ben Cardin, a Maryland Democrat ... .

- Washington Post

Ben Cardin is one of my Congress-critters, and I wrote to him this morning! Yay! (Yes, I know that chances are he hasn't yet got to my message, and may never, but still - feels good, you know?)

Happy More Joy Day ... I hope this makes you all smile.

chomiji: Kitty does not understand! A kitten snarling, with the word 'wut?' as a caption (kitty - wut)

A person named Keith Mander, who apparently has made most of his money by getting people to pay him for fluffing up their Google search positions by providing repetitive crud content, has bought a couple of fanfiction archives: LOTRFanfiction.com and a Twilight archive. He's talking out of both sides of his mouth, on the one hand claiming that he is going to improve the sites out of the goodness of his heart and on the other hand boasting about how he is going to make money from them.

The prospect of the arrival of lawyers from the Tolkien estate asking why he's making money off their clients' intellectual property apparently holds no dread for Mr. Mander.

There's more coverage on this from esteliel at Dreamwidth, and the Organization for Transformative Works is offering AO3 accounts and and import services for the authors whose work is posted at the two archives. The writers reportedly do not have the ability to cancel and scrub their accounts at these sites.

I know that there are certainly worse things happening in today's world, but this has still got me major-league ticked.

The Washington Post had a review of a recital by U.S. opera star Joyce DiDonato, in which she performed pop standards as well as arias. The WaPo reviewer loved her, so I was wondering what she sounded like.

Well, of course YouTube had videos. Lots of them. So for the past half hour I've been listening to her sing "Over the Rainbow," "I Could Have Danced All Night," and stuff like that.

She's far too mannered for my taste, and she has that operatic vibrato, which I don't like much. But man! What a set of pipes! When she goes for a high note, you know she's still got a lot more to give: such power.

Several people have noted on their journals that it's More Joy Day.

"I’m proposing that on Thursday, January 13, 2011, we each engage in one act, either here on or outside of LJ, which brings joy to another person, in the hopes that that person will spread that joy further, and exponentially onward." - sdwolfpup

I'm still owing people flashfics from last time I offered, so this joy will be icons instead.

First five people to comment each get a shiny new icon. Let me know the subject ... if you have art in mind, that's great. I do text icons too!

When someone says something like "Are you for human rights? Or for individual rights? There is a huge difference. The two cannot occupy the same space," I don't feel like listening to them any longer.

DJ BPM Studio

Lots and lots of songs listed with their BPM (beats per minute) rates. Useful not only to DJs but to people attempting to put together playlists for exercise etc. The emphasis is on recent artists, but there are gobs of classic rock as well.

On a similar note, I've downloaded Mixmeister BPM Studio, which is free on Apple's site (for Mac, of course). I think it's also available for Windows.

They're right, of course. Burns to that area could be quite painful!

I sent them an e-mail about it, so it may get fixed at some point ...
