chomiji: Sai, the courtly, go-playing Heian ghost, playing a flute - from Hikaru no Go (Sai - music)

I see that I did this only about 6 months ago, but the heck with it, I love me some constrained randomosity (in that there is a set number of songs, but within that set, it's random)... .

You can tell a lot about someone by the music they listen to. Hit shuffle on your iPod/iPhone/iTunes/media player and write down the first 10 songs. Then pass this on to 10 people. ... No tagging here, but I'd enjoy seeing your song lists.

  1. Hakol Over (This Too Shall Pass) - Idan Raichel Project
  2. A Lonely Voice - October Project
  3. Come to My Window - Melissa Etheridge
  4. Golden Slumbers - The Beatles
  5. Two Tickets to Paradise - Eddie Money
  6. Downtown Train - Everything but the Girl (Rod Stewart cover)
  7. Helen O'Grady/Drops of Brandy - Maggie Sansone (solo hammer dulcimer)
  8. East St. Louis Toodle-oo - Steely Dan (Duke Ellington cover)
  9. Car on a Hill - Joni Mitchell (YouTube link)
  10. Northwest Passage - Stan Rogers

The Joni Mitchell is one of my favorite songs ever, from the opening sax riff to the strange bridge in the middle to the sad, dreamy finish:

"It always seems so righteous at the start
When there's so much laughter, when there's so much spark
When there's so much sweetness in the dark ... ."

I 1000% agree about that Joni Mitchell song and extend it to the whole album. It was and is one of my all-time favorites.

Here's my list - RealPlayer doesn't do exactly random, it makes up an hour-long playlist of top favorites, so it's kind of cherry-picked, but here goes:

1. Dindi – Jon Lucien (Antonio Carlos Jobim cover)
2. Nada Sera Como Antes, Amanhã (Nothing Will Be As It Was, Tomorrow) – Flora Purim
3. Forget Myself – Elbow
4. Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) - Jimi Hendrix
5. My Little Brown Book – John Coltrane
6. Amie – Pure Prairie League
7. Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground – Ry Cooder
8. Fall On Me, Angel – Muddy Apes
9. Emotions Wound Us So – Larry Carlton
10. In the Waiting Line – Zero 7

If I were to suggest just one of the unknown (to you) songs, I'd go for the Larry Carlton:

You may actually know him but don't know you know him: he wrote and performed the theme song to Hill Street Blues and also was one of the guitarists on Steely Dan's 'Aja' and 'The Royal Scam'.

Oh, I bet your sister had an endless string of guys singing that song to her trying to get a rise. The only song with my name ever was the Kink's "Victoria", which wasn't a very big hit (and I'm not actually a Victoria, either). I recently found that "Amie" has another song immediately preceding on that album called "Falling in and Out of Love" that's a perfect segue into it.
