chomiji: A bear wearing pajamas, sitting at a desk, writing, with caption Yuletide (Yuletide Bear-Author)

If a fandom is your very favorite thing, and you have been dying for fanfiction from it, and you have gone through the trouble of nominating it and requesting it for Yuletide, and your canon consists of only two medium-sized paperbacks, is it really that much trouble to figure out that two of the four characters you nominated actually have full names and/or surnames in canon?

Dita is Perdita Verist: "I'm Perdita Verist, the new teacher, remember?"

Peter is Peter Merrill: "Peter Merrill! How many times have you been told not to climb things at school?" (The speaker is Peter's first grade teacher.)

I did that from memory (verified via Google courtesy of some sketchy outfit that has the full text of the books online), and it has been at least a couple of years since a re-read any of Zenna Henderson's "People" stories.

(I realize that whoever is keeping up this fandom at AO3 is at least as much to blame as the requestor: the tags give them as just Dita (The People) and Peter (The People).

chomiji: Hakkai from Saiyuki, smiling forcefully, with the caption I'm so happy I could just puke! (Hakkai - so happy (not!))

The day before a primary election is NOT a good day to stay home sick and try to get some rest.

The constant get-out-the-vote robocalls are the direct cause of the mini-tantrum I just had where I manually shredded the Official Democratic Party Poll that showed up in the mail.

chomiji: Hotaru from Samurai Deeper Kyp, looking horrified, with the caption OMGZWYF?! Translate plz (hotaru - OMGWTF?)

This morning, my friends page used my journal style, as it damn well should.

Now it's showing some stupid newish thing that looks vaguely like the mobile feed. But it's apparently NOT the new default view of the thing, because I have a button at the top to switch to the new thing.

OH. Its URL is not the right one!

It's http://chomiji.livejournal.com/feed. But ... that's what I get when I click the Friends link at the very top. AND the friends link on my actual LJ.

If I edit that to the old URL, I get what I should: http://chomiji.livejournal.com/friends/.

Is anyone else seeing this?

chomiji: Akari, the shaman from SDK ... more to her than you might imagine (Akari - autumn colors)

It's been a bad couple of weeks to be a geek woman, what with the Readercon Creeper (see linkspam) and before that hit, the CNN article about how good-looking young women in skimpy costumes aren't really geeks (see Scalzi's blog, which has a link to the original piece).

Among the comments on the Scalzi "Who Gets to Be a Geek" piece was something that crystalized for me some uneasy feelings I'd been having myself about the recent co-evolution of geekdom in general and the women who are part of it. One commenter stated:

Speaking personally: I used to think that geek culture was one of the few places that I, as a non-femme fat chick, would find acceptance. It was exciting to know that I didn’t have to look like a bikini model in order to make friends and potentially find partners. Unfortunately, now that there really ARE bikini models running around in my spaces, I’m feeling more and more marginalized. My one refuge from my culture’s violent reinforcement of body standards is evaporating, and it’s upsetting.

I don't want to feel as this commenter does. But in my heart, I sometimes feel that way, even though I know it's wrong.

Cut for long navel-gazing stuffs ... definitely at the Teal Deer level )
