I have terrible feet from the point of view of buying "lady shoes." They are wide and (apparently) also deep. It doesn't matter too much because high fashion and high heels are so not my things, but sometimes it's nice to wear something a little less matronly.

I recently made the discovery that even though the Brannock foot-measuring device says that I am a 9.5 Wide or Wide-wide, I can often fit European or U.S. "comfortable" brands if I go up to a size 10 or 11 (roughly 41-42 Euro sizes).

We have a little local boutique that specializes in Bohemian-style (fashion terminology, not world culture terminology) clothing and shoes. They had a pair that I liked, but it wasn't in stock in anything but brown. Also, the design has changed slightly this year, said the shoe guru at the shop, so they let me order a pair of this year's version in black to try. And they fit!

If you want, you can see them here.

The other good thing about this is that the manufacturer has lots of different styles that I can check out later.

chomiji: The Hebrew word 'Hineni,' meaning 'here I am' (Hineni - Hebrew for "Here I am")

My twin niece and nephew, Ilana and Sam, became b'nai mitzvah this morning. We are at a break in the raft of family events that have been arranged to celebrate this event: a family dinner last night at the hotel where most of the out-of-town guests are staying, the service this morning (where Ilana in particular knocked our socks off with LOTS AND LOTS of singing in Hebrew) followed by a Kiddush luncheon, tonight's fancy dinner party, and then brunch at my sister's in-laws' house tomorrow morning. The Young Lady and I had our aliyah and managed to get through it, and The Mr. read the "Prayer for Our Country."

So far so good, except that for some reason the ankle-strap dress shoes I wore this morning had both heel caps (a/k/a top piece or top lift) fall apart by the middle of the morning. It was the most bizarre thing. They are about 8 years old, but I have only worn them some half dozen times, and I always pack them back up in their box, wrapped in tissue, once they have aired out. These are not cheap-ass shoes, either.

Also, by the time the weekend is over, I may have had enough chocolate cake for a while.

So I've become accustomed to products that I like randomly disappearing from the face of the earth.

Like, for example, The Thymes "Green Tea," one of the only fragrances about which I've been unreservedly enthusiastic, and the one that I considered my signature: "Brisk green tea and Moroccan rose warmed with an infusion of spiced honey and soft woods ... ." They stopped making it about 5 years ago. My last bottle of the body lotion is about 75% gone.

And then going through a piled-up stack of mail today, I found a postcard:

GREEN TEA: Back by Popular Demand
Since its retirement, we've heard countless heartfelt please for the return of fan-favorite, Green Tea. You have been heard ... .

I have ordered myself a new bottle of lotion. It was pricey, but I couldn't pass up this second chance.

Today and yesterday were both warm as all get-out (for January, anyway), but there was a cold spell before that, which meant my skin got dry, which meant I had to break out the lotion etc.

Which brought me face-to-face (or perhaps arm-to-arm, since I'm OK for facial moisturizer for the moment) with the fact that I'm running out of my two favorite products, and I know that one of them has been entirely discontinued, and I'm starting to worry about the other one. I could probably do quite well with unscented stuff billed as hypoallergenic, but I like the idea of nice-smelling stuff to smear on. The problem is, so many scents and scented products give me problems of various sorts.

Cut for whinage and mild rantage )
