An Unexpected Visitor
Aug. 17th, 2008 10:42 pmI just had to show a quite large bat off the premises.
I will confess to being slightly freaked out, even though I like bats in principle, because s/he was about twice the size of any other bat I've ever seen that close.
I trapped it in the dining room (the only room on the ground floor that closes off entirely) and then with the Mr.'s coaching (I had to roust him out of bed and away from his crossword puzzle), opened a window in there and exited the room myself. A minute later, it flew outinto the night.
I have no idea how it got inside in the first place!
Yeek!

Da Bat
Date: 2008-08-19 11:59 am (UTC)At first I thought it had to be a big moth, and I was going to be very impressed because anything that big would be rare. But it wasn't content with circling the light, and then I got a good look at it. It actually was rather awful - I was feeling a complex mix of scared of it and scared for it.
Bats (and more!)
Date: 2008-08-19 05:40 pm (UTC)Hee, I'll watch out for her/his return!
The Mr. watched him for a minute and said "There's nothing wrong with it, it's not bumping into anything." But it was still very scary, as it kept dive-bombing toward me and turning away at the last minute.
(BTW, soliandxpyne are subjecting the ikkou to the MBTI ... they've already done their Gojyo post ... .)

Date: 2008-08-19 10:10 pm (UTC)I think this is what I had - not really tiny, at all ... . It's a Big Brown Bat - gotta love these "truth in advertising" names!
The usual critter I've seen is its opposite number, the Little Brown Bat, about 2/3 the size, and usually darker in color. Those are actually fairly cute, and I've rescued a couple from being trapped inside dormitories or cabins at summer camp.
