So I imagine that at least I and the Young Lady will spending the day at Balticon tomorrow. (The Mr. was muttering something about Too Much Work.) I see that they do indeed have single-day registration available, although it's $40 for Saturday.
There wasn't much manga stuff there at all, last year. A few copies of popular things like Furuba at some of the book stalls, and maybe some buttons and T-shirts referring to manga in general - but that's it!
(The Mr. is feeling rotten and I have houseguests I'd forgotten about ... his sister and our nephew, on the way back from a week-long field trip that she was helping to chaperone. Tomorrow should be very complicated ... .)
I may go to Otakon later on in the year, which is in Baltimore proper, although I am wondering about that. I have fairly bad arthritis in my knees, and it's hard for me to walk around for any length of time, but I think they might have more of the stuff I am interested in since it is manga/anime oriented on the face of it.

Well, Emerald wasn't feeling well, so about all we did was shop and then take a nap in the lobby ... we did attend one session on YA fantasy/SF writing. Some good points were made, but I was unimpressed by the authors on the panel: how can you speak as an authority on YA SF&F when you've never heard of The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley?
It's funny you should say that because I just happened to read The Blue Sword a few weeks ago. She's a great writer (it's a woman, right?) I didn't even think of it as a young adult book but now that you said it, it makes sense.
Yes, she's a woman, and married to fantasy & mystery author Peter Dickinson. If you liked Blue Sword, check out the prequel, about Aerin: The Hero and the Crown.
Like most well-written YA, it can be read by adults with no problem!
