chomijiSo if I can get my passport renewed in time, we're going to Stockholm for a week and then Copenhagen for a week in June!
We have airline reservations and a place to stay in Stockholm (well, just outside of it, actually, but less than a 15-min. subway ride to the old section of the town). But I still need to find someplace for us and our friends to stay in Copenhagen. It gets complicated because we'll be staying for a full week, but Kat and her family will only be staying for 3 days, and then they're going hiking in Norway with her in-laws.
It's exciting! I've traveled out of the U.S. a few times, but never to a non-English-speaking oountry (although I realize that many, many people in Scandanavia speak English too).

Date: 2008-04-17 06:22 pm (UTC)I'm hoping so! I'm a sucker for waterside locations and little islands, and both cities are build on islands (multiple, in each case) along the coast. And in Stockholm, the water is generally so clear that you could, if you wished, eat fish you caught in city waterways, and there's an island park where you can swim. (And yes, I probably will if the air temperature goes into the upper 70s - I swam in Ireland, and I swim in the Atlantic off Cape Cod ... it's this excellent natural insulation I have!).

My daughter was delighted to find that she's legal to drink in Denmark. Not that she wants to drink, you understand - she's welcome to try a sip of any alcohol we drink at home, and she's decided it all tastes hideous - but the idea appeals to her.

Date: 2008-04-22 02:57 am (UTC)That's a very American attitude ... ;-) I have a theory that our Puritan heritage means that we always think difficult things are better than easy things. And dry wines are harder to appreciate than sweet ones, so they must be better!
But my friend Mike the Uber Gourmet, whose father was a restaurant critic, says that there are some fine sweeter wines, and he gets me things to try from time to time, like Gewurztraminer.

Sweet, delectable and DAMN is it some fierceness. One glass will have you cross-eyed. I have the ultimate connection in N.C. (my homefry Jennifer married into the family) ^_^ I'd have to agree with you, beer is not my preference (Jagermeister is...thats the German brute in me). *shuts up now*

You've got some fancy champagne taste going there! Since you share my taste for the sweeter stuff, you might like the Italian bubbly, Asti Spumante, which my childhood friend Lorenzo's mother gave us when we were in college. She was a really fine person - she gave us a New Year's Eve party at their house (she was a widow, and Lorenzo was the youngest and the only kid left at home) with Asti and Peruginia chocolates.

I want to take boat tours of the outer islands off Stockholm and visit the Viking museum in Rosvik, east of Copenhagen ... .

(And as for people, I should be able to see ipperne in Denmark ... hey, we have some Swedes on Shejidan, don't we? I should post about this there too.)

When in June are you traveling? The 29th of June is my 25th birthday! So, *cross fingers* you must bring me back souvenirs from all your trekking! ^_^_^_^_^ (*a sucker for things from other countries* postcards even!) *puppy dog eyes* ^_______________________________________^ One of my best friends used to live in Norway, I have heard many great things about the countries beauty! I appologize for my not being around these past couple months, our other computer needed a new processer (my car died this week too *cries* something is always breaking in this house!) because my Dad is clicky-click happy and will download ANYTHING (you see where this is going LOLOL...PORN AND VIRUS' IN ABUNDANCE!) and it killed the computer, but its 'OK' now (hence my presence...though I use the term 'OK' lightly) actually, its more like on the cusp of OK and suckdom since we're only temporarily using my brother's processer and he's like the soup nazi from Seinfeld but with computers (actually he's like that with everything...even if it isnt his L..O..ugh...). I must add (warn about...advise against owning) Windows Vista, it SUCKS! DOWN WITH VISTA! It's a rediculous O.S.
Anyway! I have dearly missed you! You are so very uber-sweet! *!hugs!* How have you been? I hope things haven't been hectic (espeically since you live by D.C and all of its political going-ons and schlepings...Viva Colbert!!) in-fact, I wish for you only the best because you are most deserving! ^_^

Date: 2008-04-29 02:19 am (UTC)Stockholm is in Sweden - you're maybe talking about where I said Scandanavia? Scandanavia = Norway + Sweden + Denmark ... they all have related languages and cultures, so there's one word to use to describe all of them.
Us career gov't types don't necessarily notice the political comings and goings right away - it takes a while for the changes in agency heads to filter down to anything we have to deal with, unless we're in offices that deal directly with those political appointee types - like the public affairs office or something (which I'm not).
I've actually had some serious health issues this fall and winter but I seem to be OK for now - if you want all the grotty details let me know (I made a special posting group for my health stuff so I wouldn't gross out anyone who couldn't deal with lots of medical stuff).
Hmm, if I'm your Oka-san, then the Young Lady should be calling you Nee-san ... not sure she'll like that, she's used to being the oldest among all her cousins and our friends' kids!
Sorry about your computer woes - that's one reason we have Macs at home, because they get less of that junk.
