My first big rock fandom (the Beatles don't count: I wasn't old enough to buy my own records and didn't seek out merchandise and media coverage as I did with Queen), my senior year of high school, my first sort-of crush (I doubt he ever realized it ... but he said "You're beautiful!" when I had some practical tool of some sort in my backpack when he needed it, and I was smitten), and it was a song about science fiction ... oh, so many meanings.

OMG, I thought I was the only kind of person like that in high school. Because I used to carry a screwdriver, amongst other things, in my backpack. I still do, sometimes.

To this day, I can't remember what it was I had for him. It was late spring, and we were hanging around in a tree, in a park, after school.

Nowadays I carry a small pocketknife and electronic gizmos, like a phone battery.

I still carry a pencil, an eraser, thread, needle and cello tape. Sometimes I also take a lighter, thin wire and some kind of cutting intrument with me (either a cutter blade or some scissors). I once had to throw away a pocketknife at the airport because I totally forgot to put it in the checked-in luggage. I'm still unhappy about it.
