The issues aren't always what we think they are. Neither are the consequences.

Abortion Saved My Life

"My two kids at home were going to lose their mother because someone decided that my life was worth less than that of a fetus that wasn’t going to survive ... ."

This makes me genuinely angry at human stupidity and genuinely greatful for the healthservice I have here. I'm glad her case helped change that hospital's policy.

What makes me wonder here is why this was even considered an abortion. She was in the middle of a fucking miscarriage (or maybe at 20 weeks it's considered a stillbirth). In what universe is it right to leave that untreated?

I had a miscarriage not long after I'd found out I was pregnant, so somewhere around 6-8 weeks. Obviously, I didn't bleed as much as she did, but I had a D&C afterward. Is that an abortion?

My husband has an aunt (married to his mother's brother, was Methodist but converted to Catholicism when they married, and is now way more gung ho about it than he is) who refused to terminate or treat an ectopic pregnancy; as a result, she can't conceive. How does that make sense?

Ally and I had a discussion about abortion last night when I explained that the movie The Joy Luck Club changed what in the book was an abortion to a deliberate drowning of a newborn by his mother after his father had abandoned her because of potential political fallout. We agreed that child abuse, neglect, and poverty is a worse thing than abortion and that carrying a pregnancy to term in anticipation of adoption risks an ill-advised change of heart about keeping the baby.

Reading about situations such as hers, I get so worked up over people who ignorantly and selfishly impose their personal values and religious beliefs on other people's bodies. Just last year in my city, a nun at one of our hospitals was excommunicated due to the fact she approved an emergency life-saving abortion for a patient. How can anybody think that losing both lives is better than making the decision to terminate a pregnancy so at the least the mother can survive?

Even outside life and death situations, I feel it is better for the option to be available rather than have babies born into situations where they may be unloved or possibly even neglected or abused simply because their mother or parents didn't want them.

Some days I want to just write off the male half of the human race.
