Yom Kippur Tonight and Tomorrow ...

Chances are that I should not be online, as this is a very serious holiday. But I probably will be, because I miss everyone. It's been too quiet lately ... .

Anyway, no food after supper tonight, until services finish at about 7:00pm tomorrow. Theoretically no water, but I need to take some with my pills (which one is permitted to do).

It's my understanding that Yom Kippur has five prayer sessions, do you attend all five? It sounds like an all-day holiday, but a particularly spiritual one from all that I know about it.

Fasts are hard, but obviously they are supposed to be. I never found them to be purifying, but a mere 24 hours w/o food seems to stretch into eternity, and it has always caused me to reflect on people who must feel that way pretty much all the time.

Yes, you're right - five services: (1) Kol Nidrei, named for its most significant prayer, is held the evening of the holiday (all Jewish holidays start in the evening). (2) The morning service, also called the Torah service, which includes scripture readings from the Torah scroll and from the works of the Prophets. (3) The afternoon service, usually a more casual scripture service (I usually skip this one and go home for a break - I usually nap, although some say you shouldn't). (4) The Yizkor, or memorial service, featuring special prayers for anyone who has died during the year. And finally ... (5) Ne'ilah, the Closing of the Gates - the final service, which ends with a blast of the shofar (ram's horn trumpet).

We do remember those who fast whether they want to or not - there's always been a food drive associated with Yom Kippur anywhere I've attended services. We brought our bag of stuff in tonight.

Awww, I'm glad you like it - I did a small icon post a couple of weeks ago, special icons for fall. This one is Akari from SDK - a wonderful character, but to tell you anything more would involve spoilers. Akari doesn't show up until more than halfway through the series!

Indeed! One of the most underrated and undersold authors in the realm of fantasy! Have you read the series?

I was kind of startled to see that name, because just the day before I had had been thinking of those books because I had been doing some straightening and came across the one book I have left. Then later that day I read an article about her.

I had a book from about 20-25 years ago (in the 80's, anyway) that had two novels in it (from the SciFI Book Club). Anyway, at one point years ago I had done some research on her to find out about other parts of the series, and indicated that she couldn't find publishers for her stuff, so I got from that that she didn't have any books out. So I was absolutely thrilled when I saw that article, because it said that Baen books had the entire series in ebooks, and that they were going to reissue all of them in hardback RSN. So, I may have to pop for the complete set and catch up on the doings of Jamethiel :)

Then I saw your comment about her, and it just seemed kind of funny... three reminders of an extremely obscure author all in the space of a day or so.

Actually, I just managed to score a copy of Seeker's Mask (vol. 3) for under $20 the other day. You can sometimes find that one for an OK price, but it's hard. Vol. 4, To Ride a Rathorn, is easier because it only came out a couple of years ago.

I love those books so much. I think Dark of the Moon is my favorite ... the scenes where Jame suddenly realizes that her old teacher has poisoned her, and then she finds herself back in Perimal Darkling have a simply amazing combination of pathos, sensuality, and black humor.

Anyway, I'd be thrilled to discuss them anytime!

XD I'm doing okay - I'm baking tons of cakes for the Czech heritage festival this weekend. ^_^;; It really sucks to be surrounded by goodies but not allowed to eat them...

(And yes, I did and I loved them! But I need to get those back to you - convenient excuse for a get-together, right~?)

Yeah, we need to! I haven't seen you in, like, forever! Errrr, maybe the weekend of the 24th?

The two books both needed an editor, but I love how un-Tolkien things are. And the scenes with Bane in the third book are so excellent. And I like Kindrie, but he needs to be a little less helpless. (There's an awful lot of Tori/Kindrie slash out there ... .)

Well, of course, it's not that bad at this point - except it was too hot in the room where the evening service was held, and now I'm really, really thirsty. Tomorrow morning is when things will start to get ugly ... .
