The Trenchers were never my favorite part of the book, so I don't remember if they started working less well for me at some point -- I don't think so? But I was mostly in it for the sciency magic system, magic school shenanigans, and interesting gender dynamics, so the more time the Trenchers took up, the more annoyed by them I was.
