I'm reading Lafferty's book for the same reasons, once I get it from the library. I'll let you know. Is Lafferty NB?
I had trouble visually tracking the end of T. Kingfisher there as well. I sometimes have that trouble where the author clearly has something in mind, but either can't describe it, or I just can't see it. It was rather handwavy, in any case, which maybe suits a fairytale. I did like the other wives, especially the clockwife.
