Yeah, we do. It started around 1:00 pm downtown, and when I came home at around 4:00, there was an inch or so on top of the slush layer on the sidewalks. The local weather blog has people saying they've got anywhere from 1½ to 3 inches so far. The forecasts are pretty scary.

If you get what we've got, it's not good. When I woke up around 8:30 this morning, it was coming down hard. By early afternoon I had around 5 1/2 inches of new snow in my driveway. It sleeted for a couple of hours, and it still sounds a bit like sleet now.

I don't hear any sleet-y tapping. The weather blog says the sleet is to the south. The current accumulations around here are reported as 4 - 5 inches.

I'm sorry you have sleet - how nasty!

I wouldn't want to try using the fireplace - it hasn't been checked out since we moved in here. And what the heck would we burn? We have no firewood except that packet of "fatwood" kindling. We do have a couple of bags of wood charcoal, but not the right kind of grate for it.

The Mr. demonstrated an "axillary heater" for me: according to him, it's when you have no gloves and your hands get cold, so you cross your arms and stick your fingers into your armpits.

Hee, this goes a little past typos ... poor NWS, they probably had one heckuva a day, given that they're in the area - in fact, right down the road a piece. All us feds were sent home 4 hours early (that is, four hours before whatever our normal quitting time was), mainly so that we were all back home before Metro had to shut down the outdoor tracks (which occurs when the snow gets to 8 inches), but I bet a lot of the NWS guys are deemed "emergency" and have to work anyway.

The sleet to the south would put it here, since I'm south of you. I hate sleet. I suspect I'm in for the weekend. No point trying to go out in this weather.

I do this, without shame, all the time. Then again, I live in Maine, and I also pronounce museum "muse-AM" and wear a wool scarf around my head like a Russian grandmother every time I leave the house. So...I'm not a very accurate measure of what is normally socially acceptable :P

Hee, I wasn't necessarily implying that doing that was crude or something. It was just amusingly apropos.

And my preferred winter headgear is very similar, except that wool makes me itch, so I use rayon scarves, with 180s earmuffs on top if it's cold or windy. I look eccentric, to say the least!

I rather like looking eccentric, though, I must admit. Some friends call me Babushka because of it, and The (Ex) Boy never let me live it down, especially when I did it, say, on the way to opening night at the Met...I do love making people slightly uncomfortable, especially when it serves to highlight their unconscious prejudices, even if it's just about headgear.
