I think you know the answer to this ... I didn't love Yaone very much at first, but when she and Doku defied Kou's orders and came after him, I loved that she had overcome her need to obey and her caution for the sake of a person she loved - even though it was that same person's orders.
(That's actually a theme that C.J. Cherryh likes - the good servant who proves how good s/he is by defying orders or conditioning to do what really needs doing.)
