chomiji: Sai, the courtly, go-playing Heian ghost, playing a flute - from Hikaru no Go (Sai - music)

A distraction from RL and the serious (albeit very worthwhile) reading I've been doing:

"Comment on this post saying you want a letter - I'll give you one, then post to your journal your five favourite songs that begin with that letter - along with downloads if you like. Or music videos ... whatever works.

kispexi2 gave me P, and I prove once again that I am a sentimental sap:

Peg - by Steely Dan:

Passionate Kisses - written by Lucinda Williams, performed by Mary Chapin Carpenter:

Paths of Desire - October Project:

(No video - try this link on Rhapsody to listen)

Possession - Sarah McLachlan:

Embedding disabled, so link.

Please Read the Letter - written by Michael Lee, Jimmy Page, Charlie Jones, and Robert Plant; performed by Robert Plant and Alison Krauss:

I adore this version of Please read the letter! That cd stays in my car stereo for months at a time. (I'll take a letter.)

Thank you! And Possession is also a very favourite song of mine!

Hit me!

(And funnily enough, "Possession" has been one of my top musical obsessions of the last week or so...not the original, though, McLachlan's got one of those voices that's supposed to be pretty but somehow has a quality I find strangely grating: I've been endlessly replaying this crunchy cover version by Evans Blue.)

McLachlan does have an odd voice, doesn't she?

Heh...remember, you're talking to someone who listens to stuff like Diamanda Galas! The problem isn't oddness, it's more that it's not odd enough for my tastes -- if she did less of the floaty-smooth-upper-register stuff and had a little more of a sharp or rough edge to her voice, it'd be much more likely to grab me. ;) (Or even if she kept the smoothness but had a deeper voice -- I can almost guarantee I wouldn't have fallen in love with October Project if Mary Fahl sang soprano. Higher voices, male or female, are much likelier to fail to grab me or even actively rub me the wrong way, but I don't think I ever heard a contralto I didn't like...)

Steely Dan, alas, still leaves me cold -- although I like the live instrumentation here a lot better than the high gloss production of the album version. But I just can't get past the vocals -- I think that's another band like Rush or the Grateful Dead where I'd have to stick to instrumentals, or cover versions with a very different sort of vocalist.

The MCC I've heard many times before -- cute and catchy, although I've just never really been drawn to explore her catalog. The Krauss/Plant collaboration is totally pushing my buttons, though -- I've heard good things about that album and clearly I'm way overdue to check it out!
