Three-Day Weekend ...

chomijiSo everyone else has gone home for the three-day weekend in honor of Memorial Day ... and I was scatterbrained today (what's new?) and still have a few things to finish.
All sorts of folks are going out of town this weekend ... not us! We may do one day at Balticon, just for the hell of it. But it would be nicer to do something with friends too, and not just our li'l nuke'yular family.
Who else is staying in town (near his or her computer), I wonder ...?

Except for the SF con on Saturday, the main things I did were (a) the chores I would have had to do anyone (like the wash and the grocery shopping), (b) buy some manga (xxxHolic and Fruits Basket), and (c) lie around in bed feeling rotten for some reason. Maybe I'm developing grass pollen allergy, although it would be weird to develop it this late.
It was humid enough down here that staining anything would have been a bad idea, come to think of it ... or maybe the latest generation of stains aren't so sensitive to that sort of stuff?

Date: 2007-05-29 06:59 am (UTC)It was the Whit Sunday-breakfast which is a very common thing over here, we raise the flag and sing a song and go have breakfast together. it was all arranged by our neighbor committee, so I kinda had to go, and kinda had to look decent at the same time, but at least it included breakfast, and I was free at 10:30 am again.
And to add something to my holiday in which I ended up not staying home as much as I planned, my mom told me that my godmother was arranging the Whit monday dinner(a thing I hoped that I would be able to skip this year, but when it's my god mother, there's no excuse, she's such a wonderful person.) and I was going, and I said okay, I'm going! I have to listen to what mom says!...
I don't really know what exactly this holiday was all about(I think it has something to do with the Bible, but I'm not sure), but it was nice to see my godmother and her family...

Date: 2007-05-30 05:48 pm (UTC)I usually end up taking the kids to see their grandparents et al in Texas during part of the summer break. once we even took them to see their *other* grandparents in Egypt. our flight that time was cancelled and we were re-routed through England and France before we got to Cairo and then had to drive three hours to Alexandria.. BUT... we had one great month if you don't count the trip. that was, um, four years ago. we're still saving up energy for a second trip there!
on a side note, one day I'm going to fly over Victoria Falls in a helicopter, and climb Mt Kilimanjaro, and hike the wine country in South Africa (for starters; I'll start with that continent lol)---without the kids---all in a wild spree just to make up for being so home-bound for so many years

Last year was a huge travel year for us for some reason - we went to Arizona for spring break and London for a week in the summer, as well as our usual week in Cape Cod, where we sponge off my friend K and her family, who own a summer home in Eastham. But this year, the Cape Cod trip will be the only one. (Well, we did one overnight for the anime/mange convention Katsucon, but that was right here in town.)
I'd love to go to Denmark, Holland, and Corfu (Greek island) - all for rather weird reasons (the first two because of their role during WWII and the Holocaust, and Corfu because I fell in love with naturalist Gerald Durrell's descriptions of it in his memoirs of his childhood). We don't travel well as a family either, and we don't have any good reasons for it - we just whine a lot when we aren't well rested.

Date: 2007-06-01 02:36 pm (UTC)Oh! I looked it up, and it's related to the Jewish holiday Shavuot, on which my mother used to make kreplach (cheese-filled pasta dumplings that are a lot like ravioli, except we eat them with butter rather than tomato sauce).
Basically it started out as a pagan festival celebrating the early harvest, when the first spring crops were in and the milk animals were once again giving a lot of milk (which is why those dumplings had a soft, fresh cheese filling). But in Judaism it was later related to the giving of the Law (the 10 Commandments) on Mount Sinai, and even later, the Christians decided that it commemorates "the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and the followers of Jesus as described in the Book of Acts, Chapter 2" (from Wikipedia). As a Christian holiday it's also called "Pentecost."

I need a food icon ... I have that "Boys Day" SDK chibi illustration with Muramasa bringing Kyo something tasty in a steamer; I plan to use that. I should try making the kreplach, I guess. I make several of my Mom's old specialties, especially matzoh balls (which are also a type of dumpling). Everyone loves my matzoh balls, which makes me both proud and sad, since Mom isn't around to hear them say so. :-(

Yeah, try and make it!, and then let me know how it turned out... I'm very curious when it comes to food, and spend much time in my kitchen. I also very often serve "old fashion" food for my friends, and they all go "Oh, how do you do that???" and a couple of years ago i found out that it's only a very small part of the danish young people around my age that actually know how to cook that kind of food. And I must say that i think that is a really sad thing, because if that continues then all the specialties of my country will go into the "good old days, but we don't care"-book... but I poke my friends on a regular basis... hoping that it's contagious...
