So, Pillowfort?

Do any of you all think it has promise?

I mean, I'm right there when it comes to supporting fannish stuff: that's why I do Kickstarter and Patreon. But a social media site needs to have some stuff going on, and I'm not feeling super creative right now.

I don't think so. There are some things that raise some red flags for me -- such as the fact that it's hosted on a domain that doesn't allow adult content. That might have been an oversight but if so, that also raises questions about lack of planning and looking at the fine details.

I also have a fannish friend who's a developer/coder and she looked at the code, and she says there will be some major problems down the road. Them being taken down for 10 days (or however long it was) due to vulnerabilities was only inevitable.

I'm given to understand that this is something they intend to address down the line (by changing the domain ISTR). More than this I do not know.

This is the biggest hurdle, I think. It's definitely why I'm not on there, and won't be until/unless adult content becomes allowed.

I'm giving it a year. I might get it an account if it makes it longer than that.

i honestly can't muster much excitement for it, whether or not its chances are good. but i wasn't initially excited about dreamwidth either, and it gathered just enough momentum to tip me over, so. we'll see, i guess.

I'm on PF right now (I was in one of the beta waves) and it's fairly quiet -- which I like, frankly -- but that means it's hard to find people to add / follow if you don't want to join one of the big comms explicitly for friending people. I really do like the autistic comm they've set up there, it's a good insular place to discuss things and ask questions and get to know other autistic folks.

Overall I would say yes? Even if you're not creating fanwork or original fiction there are still things like the Blanket Boxes ( community for that here if it lets non-users see ) which are pretty rad.

They've got some huge technical difficulties to work out, and if they don't move on that fast they'll be left behind.

Definitely heard good things about pillowfort, but don't know much about it. Gonna have to check out that article you linked.

I looked at their demo and it looks pretty good to me. Has a lot of the bits that I like on Tumblr and Dreamwidth, and is trying to go for an ad-free model, which is what I want. I'd much rather pay a regular fee for a service that I (and my friends) actually want and I'm happy to sponsor others to get that. So I've signed up for an invitation.

However, owing to the deluge of people fleeing Tumblr at the moment, it's been overwhelmed with a lot of new traffic, so the joining process is currently running very slow. They said they'll send out more invites once traffic calms down a bit, so I'm trying to leave it alone at the moment, while I wait "patiently" for my invite, ahem.

TL;DR - It's still very early days, so it may not work out, but I think it's worth a shot.
