Fiction & Rape

There's something Seanan McGuire refuses to do to her characters ... and I think I need to check out her books now.

In the comments, [livejournal.com profile] nancylebov references a very interesting article from TOR: A need to deal wounds: Rape of men in Cherryh’s Union-Alliance novels. You should note that this is specifically the rape of male characters by female characters. The lead exhibits are Signy Mallory in Downbelow Station (spec. with regard to Josh Talley) and Ariane Emory I in Cyteen.

*g* You presumably know which of her series I recommend most. (Georgia!) But her urban fantasy is good fun, and all of her heroines are fabulous. I'm way behind on the October Daye series (so far I've only read two out of...five or six; I forget which number just came out), but Toby is great, and I really enjoyed Verity in the first InCryptid book.

(But Georgia is the BEST.)

I saw that! It's making me seriously consider participating. (And even if I don't, I expect I'll wander around looking at people's letters in case I can write a Treat story.) I think there're other fandoms in there I could offer, since I know I can't just offer the one. *g*

Hee, so pleased to know that I wasn't the only one who had that reaction on reading that post! (I found it on Shakesville, see.) Mael reached pretty much the same conclusion when she read it. And yeah, that's a kick-ass writer, so if her books are half as good as her blogging... I'd be all over them.
