Five Top Foods (Friday Five)
vom_marlowe asked about "Five favorite foods!"
Dark chocolate - with or without stuff added to it. I like a smooth texture on the melt, so I'm not all that happy with Black & Green's much-vaunted organic stuff, which seems brittle and grainy to me. Chocolove Ginger, Lake Champlain Peppermint Stick, and Endangered Species (multiple types: Raspberry, Cranberry & Almond, Chocolate Nibs, etc.) are favorites. I like fancy boxed dark chocolates too, like Godiva and Neuhaus.
Sushi - salmon nigiri sushi with a squeeze of lemon, flounder with shiso (perilla) leaf, yellowfin, California roll (with tobiko), and eel and cucumber roll are favorites.
My own matzoh ball soup - made from my mom's recipe.
Broiled Wellfleet scallops with butter, or in a lime-honey mustard-soy marinade - fresh from the bay the same day!
Mixed green salad with garden or farmer's market tomatoes and balsamic vinaigrette dressing - I can eat salad for many, many meals in a row without getting tired of it.

Matzoh balls are not difficult but they require the right ingredients and careful handling. My late mom's are light and fluffy, like quenelles, not the dense cannonballs that are the subject of so many comedy routines. Recipe here. You should also theoretically make your own chicken stock in which to float them!

I'm right there with you. Almost every evening, I have a huge salad for dinner, usually as the dinner itself. There's just such a lovely variety of tastes and textures to choose from, and when you can get the fresh, locally-grown ingredients, a salad is sheer bliss!
As far as everything else? Well, I can only say that I'd love to be your dinner companion some time. :)

XD
So do your travels ever take you to the Washington DC area?
(For the scallops, you'll have to go to Cape Cod. We have little local bay scallops here sometimes, but they're not the same, although they are pretty decent.)

I've never been to Cape Cod, but I'd definitely go for those scallops!

Chocolove is great - Whole Foods carries it. And you get a poem on the inside of the wrapper! Lake Champlain is also available at WF.
