Should the books be read in order?

I finished Tiger Eye this evening while waiting for the crosstown traffic to die down before heading home from a training. It definitely had its share of WTF moments where things happened for Special Plot Reasons rather than because they made any sense. But it was entertaining enough to be worth trying another one.
