A Frivolous Post: Funny Bunny
My little girl bunny, Brownie, gave me a good laugh last night. They each get a pineapple-papaya enzyme tablet with their night-time feed of rabbit chow and mixed greens. It's really a dietary supplement - it's supposed to help prevent hairball problems in their guts - but for Brownie, it's crack: the minute she smells it, she has to have it.
So I had dropped a tablet into each bowl as usual, but Brown couldn't find hers. She was getting really agitated - she could obviously smell it, but couldn't get hold of it. She pulled just about all her greens out and threw them on the floor, and chomped on them a couple of times in a very aggravated, angry manner, but didn't eat any. Finally she started casting about her dish a little more widely, and I figured out the problem:
She had been sitting on it.
It must have bounced off the edge of the bowl and between her front feet ... anyway, she did finally find it and munch it up, and was content again. Silly wabbit ... .

Afraid of them!? Brownie and Mallow are each less than 5 lbs (OK, Mallow might be as much as 6 ... that's only about 2.5 kg each) ... !
That's funny ... if we've been petting the buns and then go outside and meet any of our neighbors' dogs, the dogs are always fascinated by the smell of the rabbits on our hands.
The bunnies used to be terrified of even the smell of dogs, but the woman who's been taking care of them when we're away has several dogs - including one that's a registered therapy dog and is very careful to make sure the other dogs don't come near the bunnies - so now they're used to it.

That's her in the icon (and her foster brother, Marshmallow) ... she's meant to be "tortoiseshell" in coloring, and when she was younger, you could sometimes see a bit of the pattern, but her fur has lightened and lost contrast as she's become older. She has points like a Siamese cat, to some extent - but a paler belly.

The buns can be surprisingly dog-like in their behavior. When it's chow time, for example, they chase each other around the room, and mob my feet and nudge my ankles with their noses. The main thing that's odd when you see them do it is that they are utterly silent. It's not that they can't make noises, but in general, they don't - unless they're angry (a noise that an angry small dog might make - if it had the vocal apparatus of a guinea pig) or terrified (a really horrifying shriek - I've only heard it once).

She was also afraid of my fearless nymp "Plet". My dog has no idea of her own size, and the fact that she has teeth and claws.
but whenever she can't see the bunny, she thinks that the smell of them is wonderful... very odd

Hee, you have a wittle kitty! Brownie is a (registered!) mini-rex, which is categorized as a small breed, and I may be mistaken about her weight (haven't weighed her recently). Some rabbits can weigh more than 15 lbs (usu. Flemish Giant breed). Mallow is a mutt bunny from House Rabbit Society rescue, but he seems to be at least part English Spot - you can tell by his funky coat pattern. So he's a medium-size rabbit.
Their claws are really different from each other, more than the slight size difference: Mallow has thick, heavy claws like a dog, and Brownie has dainty wee slim claws (and they're a pain to clip because they're black, and I can't see the vein ... ).

they are about 25 centimeters from head to tail, and Plet used to enjoy taking a walk on Sophies paws^^

Oh ...! OK, that's called a cockatiel in English. Yes, well they can nip doggie noses and shriek very loudly, so maybe that was part of the problem ... some of our friends have one.

Latin is why I rarely bother to learn animal names in other languages. Besides, the latin names are much easier, and tells a lot more about the animal.

ipperne, this is smillaraaq: we met at telophase's, and she is a huge Saiyuki fan.
smillaraaq, this is ipperne. We've known each other online for almost as long as I've been here on LJ. We met through the marvellous manga epic that is Samurai Deeper Kyo, and she is now reading Saiyuki (she's awaiting the arrival of vol. 9 in the mail).

I need to get myself a digital camera! Given what I do for a living (web stuff, including some graphics) it's ridiculous that I don't have one, but I don't ... I'm going to be picky about which one I want, and I haven't had time to shop for one. Taking pix of animals is so hit-or-miss that I waste a lot of film if I do it with my existing camera.

Aww, cutie tuxedo kitty! I love cats, but since I'm the one who ends up doing all the caretaking, one set of pets at a time is enough. I can always got play with my friend K's tabby cat Josie (she also has a black cat, Abike a/k/a Abby, but the kids call Abby The Invisible Cat because she hides so much ... the only time I ever see her is when she's sacked out atop the 6-foot-tall cat tree).
(And I love dogs too, but having dogs is like having children - they are so dependent on you ... .)

Well, I love dogs ... I mean, I sometimes say that I am a dog person in a world of cats, because I am like that - sentimental, very sensitive to my companions' feelings, heart on my sleeve, hate to be sneaky or deceiving (and it's also my Oriental zodiac sign). But for that very reason, I feel that I don't have time for one right now - the amount of time we're away from the house all day would be very hard on a dog.
I'd be a fairly quiet sort of dog, not the bouncy, barky kind ... .
