chomiji: A cartoon image of chomiji, who is holding a coffee mug and a book and wearing kitty-cat ears (Gojyo - King of Hearts)

Snarfed off [livejournal.com profile] nekonexus/[personal profile] tessercat ... I saved it up for later 'cause I was too busy in August.

1. Link me to a fic of mine that sticks with you, good or bad.

2. Ask me a question about it, from 'why did you do that' to 'what happens next'.

3. I will answer, either in meta or fic form.

4. Adopt the meme if you so choose.

chomiji: Doa from Blade of the Immortal can read! Who knew? (Doa - books)

Claims lists are available at both DW and LJ (but you only need to claim in one place).

Fest schedule:

May 11 - Fic and Art Prompt posts are open
May 25 - Prompt-claiming and sign-ups begin.
June 1 - The prompt-claiming and sign-up period ends
July 20 - All Fic and Art submissions are due (see this post for the Header template)

So it's been a bit more than a month since [livejournal.com profile] whymzycal assigned me these seven things! Life has been rather complicated during that time, to say the least.

Cut for long )
chomiji: Akari, the shaman from SDK ... more to her than you might imagine (Akari - autumn colors)

These are all multi-fandom challenges!

[livejournal.com profile] purimgifts challenge: Signups open now; close on February 8 (next Wednesday)
Assignments sent out February 9
Assignments due March 3
Pinch hits due March 4-6
Postings made (actually, revealed by mods) March 7, 8, and 9
Author reveal March 10
This one is a little involved. See the rules post for the requirements for the fandom/character requests. Each day's post is one ficlet, 300-1000 words (no more than 1000 words!), and one graphic "of some kind." (Actually, you can make more graphics than that, if you like.)

[livejournal.com profile] rarewomen challenge: Signups open now; close February 8 (this coming Wednesday)
Assignments sent out around February 15
Assignments due April 30
Minimum story length: 1000 words
This signup process for this one looks pretty arcane. On the other hand, there are some nifty fandoms in the allowable list, and it looks like at least 100 people have signed up so far.

[livejournal.com profile] springkink XI: Prompt collecting now open; closes February 29
Prompt list(s) go(es) up by March 3, 2012 ( (it usually takes several posts ... )
Claiming begins on March 10, 2012 at 9:00 a.m. EST
(IIRC, claiming pretty much stays open up to the due date of the prompt)
Stories/Art will be posted between May 1 and May 31
You may claim as many prompts as you think you can handle. Each prompt may be claimed 6 times (3 claims for fiction, 3 claims for art). The minimum story length is 100 words and no, you need not write smut (I have seen things rated anywhere from G to NC-17).

From my point of view, this is pretty nifty in terms of spacing out deadlines - there are due dates of early March, late April, and throughout May.

In some AU scenarios, you can't use a manga character's original Japanese name. In ancient Rome, for example. it breaks the fourth wall to have a character named Genjyo Sanzo.

But in modern and recent-past AUs set in much of the English-speaking world (the U.S., Canada, Britain), it's not so jarring to use an Asian name.

[Poll #1739109]

chomiji: A cartoon image of chomiji, who is holding a coffee mug and a book and wearing kitty-cat ears (goku - living thing)

After consultation with my wise friends:

I have put up icons or icons plus banners.

opalmatrix has put up fanfiction.

chomiji: Yumichika from Bleach, with the caption It's Showtime! - with a musical note (yumichika-showtime!)

I'm still very blocked on writing (although the ice dam may be melting - I was actually telling myself stories again the last couple of evenings, instead of re-running bits of other people's stories), so let's have some conversation.

Respond with requests to know about my top five anythings of your choice, and I'll work on them over the next week or so.

chomiji: The Saiyui Ikkou peering through a door. Caption: Fangirls- They're Everywhere- Can't be too safe (Saiyuki - fangirls)

Some posts that I enjoyed and admired included:

Must remember to blog yuki-onna's The Orphan's Tales: In the Night Garden one of these days.

chomiji: Gojyo from the manga Saiyuki, with the heart and letter K from the King of hearts in a deck of cards (Gojyo - hearts)

My graphics offering and opalmatrix' fanfiction offering are still at their minimum bid! Get a bargain! Let me make pretties for you! Make her write het, even ... Black Lagoon, SDK, BotI ... ! ;-)

chomiji: Tenpou and Kenren from Saiyuki Gaiden; caption: Love is a land withoout borders (Tenpou-Kenren - no borders)

Linkspam has had a lot of stuff that's made me think hard in the past couple of days. This is one that I really liked because it gives me a level to which I can aspire:

How Do I Know If I'm Getting It Right? (by Paul G. Bens, Jr.)

chomiji: Gojyo from the manga Saiyuki, with the heart and letter K from the King of hearts in a deck of cards (Gojyo - hearts)

Of course, to me, the Four Questions start with Ma nishtana ha-lailah hazeh ... . However, the meme has something a little more personal in mind! It goes like this:

  • Leave me a comment saying "Resistance is Futile."
  • I'll respond by asking you four questions so I can satisfy my curiosity
  • Update your journal with the answers to the questions.
  • Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions

lady_ganesh asked me:

  1. Who's your favorite character to write?

Has to be Gojyo from Saiyuki! I think he lets the inner me come out and play.

  2. What's your favorite offline hobby?

The Young Lady heard me ask this outloud and said it has to be reading. I'll add photography - although that goes online once I post the pix to Flickr.

  3. Do you go to conventions? (I can't remember.) Is there one you want to go to?

I do like to go to cons sometimes. I used to run tournaments at gaming cons. Now I hang out and take pictures of people in costumes. I've gone to Katsucon the last couple of years and hope to do so again in 2010.

  4. What's your favorite fannish possession?

After the actual books and manga themselves, it has to be my big print of this picture (pefectly worksafe; click on the image once you get there so you can see the whole thing properly). telophase drew/painted this for me! I won her in a charity auction, and asked for something with four mysterious shop keepers from manga/manhwa. We have this framed and hanging in the dining room.

chomiji: Ikkaku form Belach, with the caption Let Me Explain via Interpretive Dance (ikkaku-explain)

Reply to this meme by yelling "Words!" and I will give you five words that remind me of you. Then post them in your LJ and explain what they mean to you. These are the words given to me by redbrunja:

Saiyuki, underwear meta, breast cancer, timed writing, East coast )
chomiji: A cartoon image of chomiji, who is holding a coffee mug and a book and wearing kitty-cat ears (byakuya - not amused)

All sorts of crud posted up there, and not one diagram of the lower decks of a PT boat! Honestly!

chomiji: A cartoon image of chomiji, who is holding a coffee mug and a book and wearing kitty-cat ears (Yuletide - windchild)

Ta daaah! I haz a story outline!

> collapses into chair <

> headdesk <

I'm in trouble, aren't I?

chomiji: A cartoon image of chomiji, who is holding a coffee mug and a book and wearing kitty-cat ears (Croc - brain dumb)

I have no inspiration right now for the prompt - all my brain wants to write is more of this angst epic I'm already writing, which is, I think, finally at the halfway point.

chomiji: Yukimura from Samurai Deeper Kyo, smiling and clapping his hands. Caption: Happiness (Yuki-happy)

telophase has finished the picture I won from her in the Sweet Charity auction a while back. It is the most gorgeous thing! Check it out here, and also see her notes about how it came about - what I prompted, and what happened after that - because I think it was an interesting process.

And I have won the story that emungere offered on the livelongnmarry auction, which closed in the wee hours of the morning! I need to come up with something really good in the way of an idea ... probably I will do a few ideas, as I did for the picture, and hope that one really hits home.

(A digression - or perhaps not - on the subject of creativity on demand: In my gaming heyday, when I ran tournaments at cons and stuff, someone once asked me what type of roleplaying scenario I liked best as a player myself: Tolkien-ish? Oriental fantasy? SF? Urban noire fantasy? Spy? My answer was: "If the gamesmaster is good, then whatever the gamesmaster enjoys running the most."

XD

chomiji: Shigure from Fruits Basket, holding a pencil between his nose and upper lip; caption CAUTION - Thinking in Progress (shigure-thinking)

telophase had some fun with this a little while ago, so I thought I'd give it a try, because it's too quiet on LJ for me:

Choose two of my icons [or heck, two characters from two different authors' works that you know I've read, manga, SF&F, whatever] and I will tell you what happens when those two people (or things) get together. Definition of "get together" may vary. Response may be phrased in the form of a snippet or sentences of random blathering.

I got a lovely postcard from some of my friends at Shejidan! They had a mini-convention in New York City the other week. (I swear, the Post Awful must have sat on this for a while ...I think ipperne's last post from Denmark arrived faster than this.) Thank you, Sk8er, Griffinmoon, Suzdal, Starexplorer, and Kokipy!

In totally unrelated news, I'm struggling to resist thinking about the new saiyuki_time prompt. I thought I'd maybe write it tonight, but the Young Lady is suffering social withdrawal (it's Spring Break, and her best friend is skiing in Colorado). So she mugged me after dinner when I tried to sit down to answer e-mail and write a story, and made me look at people's usericons with her instead. I admit that this certainly wasn't the roughest motherhood moment I've ever had ... .

chomiji: Shigure from Fruits Basket, holding a pencil between his nose and upper lip; caption CAUTION - Thinking in Progress (shigure-thinking)

I'm sure I'm overthinking this. It's a problem I have: why let something be simple and clearcut when it can be convoluted and weirdly awful?

louiselux has set up a wonderful new community, saiyuki_time - Daytripping to the West, for timed fic challenges. The first challenge is up, and the time is 1 hour. I am excited - but I've never done a time writing challenge before.

The time is just the time I spend actually committing words to media, right?

(I feel so stupid.)

chomiji: Shigure from Fruits Basket, holding a pencil between his nose and upper lip; caption CAUTION - Thinking in Progress (shigure-thinking)

So I've noticed that people sometimes do fic writing that uses writing prompts that seem like writing exercises, albeit enjoyable ones ... "50 Things" is one such.

Where does one find these prompts?
